Hessa Al Qahtani, the head of Al Ain Zoo’s conservation programme, told 7DAYS the public needs to understand that buying illegal animal goods are fuelling the industry.
She said: “It’s a tragedy, it’s wrong. In the UAE the lack of awareness of these issues is the main cause for such behaviour.
“Smuggling animals is one of the major threats facing wildlife. We know that wildlife populations, especially endangered species, are declining due to climate change, habitat destruction and smuggling.”
