Hessa Al Qah­tani, the head of Al Ain Zoo’s con­ser­va­tion pro­gramme, told 7DAYS the pub­lic needs to un­der­stand that buy­ing il­le­gal an­i­mal goods are fu­elling the in­dus­try.

She said: “It’s a tragedy, it’s wrong. In the UAE the lack of aware­ness of these is­sues is the main cause for such be­hav­iour.

“Smug­gling an­i­mals is one of the ma­jor threats fac­ing wildlife. We know that wildlife pop­u­la­tions, es­pe­cially en­dan­gered species, are de­clin­ing due to cli­mate change, habi­tat de­struc­tion and smug­gling.”
