Ronaldo has a century in sight
Real star nears Champions League scoring milestone
Not much stands in the way of Cristiano Ronaldo from making another entry to his already mile-long list of achievements. The Real Madrid forward will have a good shot at scoring his 100th goal in European competitions tonight.
Ronaldo, who is one of the front-runners for the Ballon d’Or, is two goals short of that landmark as Real Madrid visit Legia Warsaw in the Champions League tonight.
The Portugal forward arrives primed for more goals after recovering his ruthless touch on Saturday, when he scored his 38th career hat-trick in a 4-1 win over Alaves in the La Liga.
Ronaldo is the all-time leading scorer in the Champions League, with 95 of his European goals coming in the top-flight tournament, which he helped Madrid win for a record 11th time last season. Ronaldo’s Barcelona rival Lionel Messi has closed the gap after netting six goals to lead the Champions League stats this season. Ronaldo has two so far this term.
Messi has 89 Champions League goals, and 92 in all UEFA competitions.
Legia have lost all three group matches in the tournament so far and will face Madrid all alone at the Wojska Polskiego Stadium, whose doors will be closed to the public by UEFA owing to fans’ racist behaviour during an earlier loss to Borussia Dortmund.
