Fatal lack of focus
Driver was ‘not paying attention’ in attempt to weave through traffic
This was all that remained of one motorist’s 4x4 after he ploughed into a lorry while failing to watch the road ahead.
The dead Nissan Patrol driver was one of three people who died in a series of road accidents in recent days. Ten others were taken to hospital.
Most of the crashes involved drivers suddenly swerving to make exits or turnings, Dubai Police said.
The Patrol driver, an Emirati, died when his vehicle smashed into the back of a lorry on Emirates Road on Friday.
Colonel Saif Muhair Al Mazroui, Director of Traffic Department in Dubai Police, said: “He was driving his 4x4 vehicle on the highway at high speed and didn’t notice the lorry in front of him, which was going slowly because of a traffic jam. He went straight into the back of the lorry and died on impact. He didn’t pay attention to the road.”
Al Mazroui said investigators are trying to determine what caused the distraction.
But Al Mazroui added: “Many motorists still don’t pay attention to the road and are busy messing with a phone or the radio. On a highway with speed of 120kph motorists must be fully focused.” Meanwhile, an accident involving two cars in Al Barsha on Friday left one young Emirati girl dead and six other people injured, some severely. Al Mazroui said the driver of the car that the girl was a passenger in swerved across three lanes to make a U-turn. The girl survived the impact but was trapped inside the car. She later died in hospital. In another smash, in Al Quoz Industrial Area on Friday, a 4x4 swerved off First Gulf Street and crash into a street light. A man and woman were injured in the accident. On Saturday, a Pakistani motorcyclist was killed when he crashed into a pick-up truck on Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Road near the Dubai-Al Ain Road exit. In September, Al Mazroui said 130 people had died on the city’s roads in the first seven months of this year – almost 70 per cent more than the same period last year. At the time he said too many motorists simply “don’t care” about the rules of the road or showing courtesy to other drivers.
