Sur­vey: cricket um­pires reg­u­larly face ver­bal abuse

A sur­vey con­ducted in the UK by the Univer­sity of Portsmouth in con­junc­tion with the BBC found that more than half of cricket um­pires faced ver­bal abuse and ag­gres­sive con­fronta­tions. A to­tal of 763 um­pires took the sur­vey. One par­tic­u­lar Der­byshire-based um­pire was even spat at dur­ing a game. More than 40 per cent of um­pires said that the ris­ing risks have made them think of quit­ting.
