Survey: cricket umpires regularly face verbal abuse
A survey conducted in the UK by the University of Portsmouth in conjunction with the BBC found that more than half of cricket umpires faced verbal abuse and aggressive confrontations. A total of 763 umpires took the survey. One particular Derbyshire-based umpire was even spat at during a game. More than 40 per cent of umpires said that the rising risks have made them think of quitting.
