Bridging over traffic
A 20,000-capacity arena is to be built in Dubai’s City Walk.
The Dubai Arena will be a multipurpose venue and used for events such as large-scale music concerts and sporting occasions, such as ice hockey and basketball.
The ground has already been broken on the project, which is expected to be open to the public by late 2018.
Abdulla Al Habbai, Group Chairman of Meraas, the holding company behind the project, said: “The new destination will enrich Dubai’s existing infrastructure and will add a new state-ofthe-art venue that will accommodate international events and will raise Dubai’s credentials as a premium leisure and entertainment hub.
“Dubai Arena will host famous and world-renowned athletes, artists and performers and attract tourists to Dubai all year round.
“It will also host large global events and performances that have not visited the region as yet due to the lack of a suitable platform for holding similar events.”
Harvey Lister, the chairman of AEG Ogden, the company that is managing the venue, said: “Dubai Arena is a significant project that will impact the live entertainment industry in the region and will add a new experience to what Dubai will have to offer its residents and visitors.
“What makes Dubai Arena stand apart from its counterparts is its remarkable size, capacity and ability to be transformed from a theatre to a stadium depending on the scale of the event.”
The venue will also be available to host large scale “unconventional weddings requiring grand decorations”. Plans have been launched to put tunnels, bridges and expand the three lanes of the Fujairah to Qidfa Road. National news agency WAM announced the plans are a direct result of a directive from HH Sheikh Hamad bin Mohammed Al Sharqi, Supreme Council Member and Ruler of Fujairah. Brigadier Mohammed Ahmed bin Ghanim Al Kaabi, General Commander of Fujairah Police, said that a company has already been assigned to implement the project, which will begin construction work early next year and complete the work over two years. He said that the Ruler of Fujairah was briefed earlier about traffic congestion on the road and the expansion plans to help ease traffic.
