Mercedes smartens up the E-Class
The new Mercedes-Benz E-Class has been hailed as the firm’s most intelligent model yet. With the help of Emirates Motor Company, Simon Pluckrose takes a look at what’s on board
Drive Pilot maintains a safe driving distance from the car in front while cruising at speeds of up to 130kph. It will also adjust steering based on surrounding vehicles and structures, meaning it’ll keep the car going straight even without lane markings. Active Emergency Stop Assist can bring the car to a standstill if it detects the driver is no longer in control. Evasive Steering Assist helps the driver steer the car around a hazard if it detects they are performing an emergency evasive manoeuvre. Active Blind Spot warns the driver via the side mirror when vehicles are located in the blind spots. Attention Assist warns the driver if they are being inattentive or appear drowsy. The Pre-Safe system takes preventive measures in case of an accident, such as belt tensioning, closing windows and the roof and positioning the front passenger’s seat. Active Brake Assist warns the driver of impending collisions, such as a pedestrian in the road (pictured) or a car crossing at a junction, and will even apply the brakes if the driver does not respond. Obstacles are spotted using radar and cameras.
