Ten per cent charge, we pay for the service twice

7 Days in Dubai - - DEAR 7DAYS -

I’ve found NO sensible reason for a hotel to charge an extra 10 per cent service charge over and above the rate for the experience of staying in a hotel. Because as far as I’m concerned the service is part of the hotel experience. I’ve heard many reasons for the service charge hotels add to your hotel bill along and I’m still not convinced. Suggestion 1 – The more people that book into the hotel, the harder the service staff have to work. But the more people in the hotel, the more paying customers. Any extra monies the hotel want to pay the service staff for working harder can come out of the extra rates (and profits) they’re receiving for a full hotel. Suggestion 2 – It’s enforced by government to ensure that the hotel pays for improving the lives of their staff members. But surely the government should ensure that the hotel (which is directly benefitting from the privilege of having happy, productive staff on their payroll) covers this expense, and not the customer, who, again, is already paying. Suggestion 3 – Transparency. If you pay the 10 per cent service charge, you’re ensuring that at least that amount will go to paying the staff. But once you leave the hotel, who has ANY idea where that money goes? If I choose to stay in a hotel, I’m at the whim of the hotel’s amenities, staff and service – but I pay THE HOTEL the respective room rate to be treated accordingly. The fact is that if the success of the hotel depends on the service staff, and they’re doing well, the hotel will do well and it should in turn remunerate their staff. Municipal Tax – I get. Tourism fee – I get. But it just makes no sense that a hotel guest should be made to pay for what is essentially the exact same thing twice. But I live to be enlightened. Matt UAE I’m passing sometimes the police. If they did well I would ask the same question, how else shall I cross fly over? Probably they know as well that there is no other way. Just use it nobody will say anything. SZ Dubai
