Service charge helps to cover a hotel’s costs

7 Days in Dubai - - DEAR 7 DAYS... -

In response to the letter ‘Ten per cent charge, we pay for the service twice’ (Letters, November 10), tax is enforced by the government – service charge is not. By staying in a hotel and signing the registration card you agree to avail services in exchange of a set fee – that’s all. It is not up to you to question rates and what they do with the money hence the transparency part is void. Getting to the service charge – ideally it goes to cover expenses of the staff that work in a hotel, same as in a restaurant, they are not tips but they cover the establishment expenses in providing meals, accommodation, uniforms and other associated costs and a portion of it is supposed to be shared with the team periodically.
