England may have been forced to settle for a draw in the first Test against India but coach Trevor Bayliss is confident his touring side can emerge victorious come the end of the five-match series. Having declared on 260-3 and set India 310 to win in 49 overs, England came up short as the home side survived a tough final session to reach 172-6 at the close. However, Bayliss was encouraged from what he saw from his side and stressed that England are in India to claim a series victory. “We are under no illusions, we know the next four matches will be very difficult and possibly the wickets a little different,” said Bayliss. “But we’re here to win the series.” The Australian was also full of praise for debutant Haseeb Hameed, who made 82 in the second innings before eventually being caught and bowled by Amit Mishra. “It feels like he’s been here for two or three years, he has fitted in so well,” added Bayliss. “The composure and attitude for a 19-year-old has been fantastic.” Hameed’s opening partner Alastair Cook, who hit his 30th Test century when making 130 from 243 deliveries, was equally enthusiast about the teenager. “A brilliant knock – he looked the real deal in the first innings, then to bat in the second innings the way he did, when we only had a lead of 50, was brilliant,” said the captain. “I don’t want to heap too much praise on him but he looks a good one.” Despite the praise for all quarters, Hameed plans on simply playing his game in the next Test, which starts on Thursday. “Cooky mentioned that it was no time since he was giving me a masterclass when I was with the U-19s and here we are fielding together at short leg,” said Hameed. “It is quite surreal how quickly things have happened but I am trying to take it all in my stride and not look too far ahead.”
