Mourinho: We are the unluckiest team in the PL
Super-sub Giroud heads home late equaliser for the Gunners
Olivier Giroud spoiled Jose Mourinho’s night when the Frenchman scored an 89th-minute equaliser as Arsenal snatched a 1-1 draw at Manchester United, despite being outplayed in a disappointing Premier League match between the two heavyweights.
Giroud cancelled out Juan Mata’s 68th-minute goal when he headed home at the far post with Arsenal’s first effort on target.
“Of course it is two points dropped,” said United boss Mourinho. “We were the best team by far. They had no chances to win.
“This team at the moment is the unluckiest team in the Premier League. That is the reality.”
Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger’s winless run in competitive meetings with rival coach Mourinho extended to 14 matches, but the Frenchman will probably not be too concerned with that after seeing his side escape with a point.
“We lacked a bit of sharpness,” said Wenger. “What is it down to I don’t know but at least we came back. The players who came on made a massive difference.”
United scorer Mata rued Arsenal’s late leveller. He said: “Very frustrating, to be honest. We were really close to winning the game.
“[But] this is the Premier League they only needed one chance.”
That one chance fell to Giroud, who is making a big claim for a starting place now that he is fully fit following a delayed start to the season after the summer European Championship.
Meanwhile, Giroud’s strike partner Theo Walcott alluded to the thoughts of his manager and said: “I think we maybe deserved more based on our first-half performance but they came at us in the second half and maybe a draw was a fair result.
“In years gone by this was a very tough place for us to play and we managed to get a result.”
