Dhs800,000 payout for worker left paralysed
A maintenance worker has been awarded Dhs800,000 after becoming paralysed when a stack on wooden panels fell on him at work. The Federal Supreme Court upheld earlier rulings by lower courts that ordered the boat building company and its insurance firm to pay the Arab man Dhs400,000 in compensation for the damages he suffered. The firm was also told to pay another Dhs400,000 for the man’s medical and other expenses. Court documents stated that the man was doing maintenance work on a boat when wooden panels in the premises fell on him. A medical report said the Arab suffered from broken legs, broken hands and injuries in other body parts that resulted into 100 per cent paralysis. Both the court of first instance and appeal court found the man’s employer to have not provided the necessary safety equipment. The firm kept challenging their rulings, but the UAE's top court rejected it.
