Fiji confident of living up to favourites tag
43-7 The score in the Olympic final as Fiji thrashed Team GB
During the Rio Olympics, Fiji proved that they could flourish under the most immense pressure as they thrashed Team GB in the final to deliver their country’s first-ever gold medal. Having returned home to a heroes’ welcome, the rugby-mad Pacific Island now expects the Fijian side to continue their domination of sevens rugby. Tasked with delivering success in Dubai is Naca Cawanibuka. And the interim head coach is confident his players will once again thrive under the weight of expectation. “We know the expectation from our people to perform and also we have a big target on our back as well,” he said. “But we are focused on the job and we realise the results of the past have no bearing on what will happen this weekend. “The key is to keep them grounded as when the Fiji boys are relaxed, calm and smiling that is when they perform to their best. “We want to play the game as a free spirit and players to express themselves in the Fijian way. “As long as we can do that then we can look to win every time we go out there.” Fiji are the defending champions in Dubai and have managed to keep the core of the team that delivered Olympic gold in Rio. They will be in Pool A alongside Argentina, Canada and Wales.
