FOR A RELATIVELY CHEERY BUNCH, WE CRY AN AWFUL LOT AT WORK. On one particular day, there were no fewer than four people crying. Not just once, but repeatedly. And not just small, silent tears making faces damp, but blubbering, red-eyed, throat-clenching crying. Real tears.

Why? We decided a couple of months back that we would end 2016 by celebrating some amazing stories of strength, love and fearlessness. We went out to find people who had taken 2016 by the horns, stared it in the eyes and come out of the experience on top. But we had no idea how emotional the stories would be...

We found Zhineh, whose life was saved by her boyfriend; Wendy, who has dealt with one of the hardest human experiences, all while still raising children and starting a new career.

We also spoke to counsellor Helen Williams about 2016 being a more difficult year for some people and why this might be and, as part of that story, spoke to Nourie – a strong, vibrant woman who says 2016 is the year that brought her to her knees.

The raw emotions of these women who live alongside us in our community – their strength, their openness, their courage – have had us welling up with tears (but not sad ones) on a daily basis. As such, we are delighted to celebrate their stories and, in doing so, witness their achievements and their journeys.

So, read on to hear about these inspiring women and what they have learnt and achieved this year. And, if you see them, give them a high-five for pulling through adversity with a smile on their face. And, while you are at it, give yourself a little high-five too. Because we all have had highs and lows this year, so there is no doubt that you probably deserve a little cheer too.

Have a wonderful December – see you next year!
