Think yourself happy

Aquarius - - EDITOR’S LETTER -

SO MEONE TOLD ME ONCE THAT LIF E WILL SEND YOU LESSONS.

Andd that if you refuse to learn them, the lessoon will keep knocking on your door until you pay attention. As hippy-ish as the theorry sounds, this proves to be true for me time aand time again. This month, it’s been the lessson of positive thoughts. I’vve recently started a new awesome exercisse class (@PeachSeriesbyJesBody), which is more than just a physical workout. As partt of the deal, we are encouraged by our super-loovely, hugely inspiring, ridiculously fit and ever-energised intrepid leader Jes Body, to post ddaily mantras on our group chat. I resisted at first and then, with Jes’s prodding, started going through the motions of finding positive mantras online and posting them. And the strangest thing happened. After about a week, I found myself waking up thinking about my mantra for the day and eagerly waiting for the rest of the crew to upload theirs. As a result of these mantras, I found that I had a healthier, happier attitude to my days – the stresses and the joys. I started feeling more energised and motivated to tidy up the house, sell my car, replace my lost Emirates ID (for the umpteenth time). Everything just seemed clearer, and more surmountable. I felt lighter. Around the same time, I interviewed a wonderful woman with an amazing story (see page 26) about how she overcame serious childhood health issues – not just using medication and therapy, but also positive psychology. As a result, this woman is such a strong believer in positive psychology that she has done a Masters in the subject.

The notion that we can choose how we feel is a difficult one to get your head around when it seems like the odds are stacked against you. But the effects and impact of changing your state of mind are real.

This, in the month when we are celebrating International Women’s Day (March 8 – check out our round-up of the best ways to celebrate it on page 14), is a great lesson. Even when we feel like we don’t have much choice because of our adult responsibilities, we can choose how we are going to think. And that single decision can determine the outcome of each day. It’s powerful and is a source of great inner strength. So if you haven’t tried sharing daily mantras before, team up with some friends and try it out... You might just like it. Have a fabulous Women’s Day!
