IWF as containing child sexual abuse images rose by 118 per cent on the previous year. Almost 70 per cent of the images were of children assessed to be under 10 years old and a third were extremely distressing. In the UAE, Dubai Police and the Telecommunications Regulatory Authority (TRA) launched a campaign to spread awareness of ‘cyber extortion’ in 2015. Dubai Police received 212 complaints of online blackmail in 2015, up from 80 cases in 2014. The TRA also launched Salim.ae, an online resource to increase internet safety awareness.
The problem is also here to stay. Anyone under the age of 25 is a digital native: their online and offline worlds overlap.
