Killed for love
She was forbidden to see him, because her parents thought he wasn’t good enough. They presumably thought because Mehvish Hakim was only 14, it was simply a case of puppy love that would fizzle out and die. But the teenager knew it was the real thing and sent love letters to Abdul, her neighbour, by leaving them under a loose brick in the wall. So far, so Romeo and Juliet. When they were older and confident enough, the pair eloped. Mehvish was 20 and thought her parents, from a village in Maharashtra, central India, would come round once they saw how happy she was. Instead they filed a kidnapping case against her husband and asked the traditional village council to banish his family from their homes.
The couple were forced to seek help from the Love Commandos, a charity that helps cases like theirs, and they appeared on Bollywood star Aamir Khan’s TV show Satyamev Jayathe saying they were scared and feared for their lives. Five months later Abdul was shot dead after going to the pharmacy to buy headache pills for Mehvish.
