Selling a dream

Friday - - Welcome to Friday - Karen Pasquali Jones Editor kpasquali

Sadhan Chandra Mistry had crippling stomach pains but he couldn’t afford a doctor or any treatment. So for three days his wife and four children prayed he would recover or that the rains that had flooded the road to the government hospital five kilometres away would abate.

Tragically, by the time his desperate wife Subhasini borrowed money to get him help, it was too late. She became a widow at 33 simply because she was poor. Subhasini could have become bitter, or been overwhelmed with grief and poverty along with the pressure of raising her children alone. Instead she vowed to give them all the best education and to build a hospital to treat patients free of charge so no one had to die needlessly.

She took on jobs as a farm labourer, maid and sold vegetables to pay for her children’s schooling, to buy land and pay for the hospital. It took 40 years but in 1993 her hospital, Humanity Trust, was opened, and has so far treated 250,000 people, saving countless lives. Her son Ajoy is a doctor there and one of her daughters a nurse. Subhasini is an inspiration to them, her villagers and to us – and she did it all for her late husband. As she says on page 22, “Whenever a poor patient gets treated by the hospital, I see the face of my husband.” Until next week, This week I’m loving… 1. I’m going all Girly over Laura Mercier’s ultracreamy Crème Smooth lipsticks. Perfect for a polished look, they’re subtle shades that make your lips look fuller and feel moisturised. Girly is a pretty pink while Spiced Latte is a delicious caramel. Dh155, Harvey Nichols. 2. LancÔme Génifique Youth Activating Concentrate really is a miracle in a bottle. A few drops in the morning and evening will soon reduce fine lines and leave your skin softer and plumper. I’ve even been able to fib about my age, I look so much younger! Dh398, 30ml, Areej 3. L’Artisan Parfumeur’s Caligna Eau de Parfum is a gorgeous woody-floral blend of sage, mandarin tree leaves with rose bud, pine needles and ambrox that doesn’t sound like it should work as a summer scent but so does. Dh599, 100ml, L’Artisan Parfumeur Boutique.
