Do you open your wardrobe every day to a sea of boring blacks and greys? Switch up your style this season with our top tips for getting out of your fashion rut, says Gemma Jones
Men, get out of your comfort zone with our brilliant suggestions to jazz up your wardrobe.
GET INTO PRINT
Tempting as it is to stick to safe and simple staples, patterns will give your wardrobe an instant lift. From stylish stripes to check-me-out checks and polished paisleys, adding just a few statement pieces to your existing wardrobe can fast-forward your fashion sense in a snap. Take it slowly with printed shirts to start with – and the patterned blazer can wait until you’re ready to make more of a sartorial statement.
PAY ATTENTION TO DETAIL
If you aren’t confident in the style stakes then accessories are your saviour when it comes to adding character to an outfit. Begin by investing in a useful-yet-stylish man bag – preferably one you can use at work and at weekends – and then add some finishing touches in the form of belts, pocket squares or quirky cufflinks. Layering accessories will turn an outfit of dull basics into a dapper ensemble, and don’t be shocked if the compliments come flying in – it’s amazing how much difference the details make.
STEP IT UP
Does your shoe collection amount to no more than one pair of smart brogues for formal occasions, and a classic sneaker to go with everything else? Break out of the typically limited male footwear mould and get a little more well-heeled with braver colour choices and quality materials. Stay safe with the classic brogue, loafer or espadrille, but jazz them up by choosing luxe leather or suede exteriors, experimenting with pattern or even going bold with a splash of colour – darker shades of primary colours blue, red and yellow add interest while maintaining masculinity.
INVEST IN YOUR WEEKEND WARDROBE
Splashing out on a suit for work might come second nature to you, but your casual closet deserves some TLC too. Do you live in jeans? Make sure they’re a quality pair – budget denim always shows. And take tailoring into your weekend too with a smart blazer, waistcoat or statement chinos mixed and matched with casual shirts or low-key tees for the ultimate in laid-back style.
