Right Bite

Tested by Tabitha Barda, Friday lifestyle editor The concept: Right Bite provides healthy eating programmes tailored to your needs – whether you want to lose weight, are pregnant and need a good food plan, or if you have certain food intolerances. The experience: While my BMI was within the normal range, my doctor had recommended that a wheat-free diet might help me to feel better and less sluggish after eating. I’d tried doing it on my own, but was getting very bored with the limited options available – there’s only so long that you can put up with just protein and vegetables, and travelling to specialist shops to stock up on wheat-free carbs was becoming tedious.

Right Bite recommended its Selective Plus full programme, which meant wheat-free breakfast, lunch, dinner and morning and afternoon snacks six days a week. I picked my 14-day menu all in advance in the consultation room in Satwa, and cooler bags containing all my meals for the day were to be delivered by 6am every morning. The menu: I was very excited to start eating bread and cake again, and the wheat-free breakfast pancakes with lemon and ricotta were the stuff of foodie fantasies – far from being a humble substitute, they were moist, fluffy and the perfect balance of sweetness and tart, and I would pay to have them in any restaurant.

I was really impressed with the variety on offer – everything from wheat-free spaghetti with spicy prawns to vegetable quesadillas and fajitas, as well as wholesome fish curries, salmon couscous and crisp halloumi salads meant I didn’t ever feel like I was on a wheat-free plan.

Every meal was attractively presented and packed full of flavour. Accompanied by a daily fruit salad, yogurt and side vegetable dishes as well as desserts with every meal, I certainly didn’t go hungry either. Pros: I enjoyed the variety and tastiness of the food. It solved the issue I’d had with having to source wheat-free substitutes, and was more delicious than I could have imagined.

Deliveries came on time every day without fail, and I was amazed by how much good food could fit inside the neat little cooler bags – with other deliveries I’ve tried I’ve felt like I’m lugging around a hefty great food sack, so the demure Right Bite packaging was a far less embarrassing companion on the Metro. Although I chose all of my dishes for the 14 days in the initial consultation, the online menu system is one of the most sophisticated of all the diet delivery brands, and my nutritionist caught up with me regularly to check I was enjoying everything. Cons: Although the food dislikes I mentioned in my consultation were all totally adhered to, I did end up with the odd yogurt flavour that I hadn’t chosen, which I’m sure would have been sorted out had I minded enough to mention it. The wheat-free breakfast bread paled in comparison to the gourmet-standard wheatfree pancakes, but I still ate it all up every day. Although the consultation with the nutritionist was more thorough and informative than any I’ve had with other diet deliveries, the initial consultation costs from Dh300, while some others will include consultations for free. The result: I didn’t go into this to lose weight, but I was 0.5kg lighter by the end of it, and felt much better for eating only wheat-free foods consistently. Personally I would prefer five days on the diet, with a full weekend of my own food, but six days is advisable for those serious about losing weight. Verdict: All in all it definitely has the best food, variety and service of any of the diet deliveries I’ve come across in Dubai, and the only thing that would stop me from having it all the time is the price, as it’s also on the steeper end – but after all, you get what you pay for. Price and details: Dh1,950 for 14 days full package on the Selective Plus programme (for those with food intolerances or more than four food dislikes), or Dh3,690 for 28 days.

A 10 per cent discount on any of the packages is available for Friday magazine readers when quoting the reference: RB333615. Contact 04 338 8763 or email info@right-bite.com for more information. No two discounts or promotions can be availed together. Offer valid until October 31, 2013.
