CLEANSING:

Friday - - Society Living Leisure -

There’s a big shift in the way your skin looks when you reach your 40s. If you were a sunworshipper who skipped on sunscreen years before (even only occasionally), cumulative damage will show itself in the form of pigmentation, blotchiness, red spots and ruddiness. With collagen and elastin levels dropping, skin retains less moisture, starts to lose its firmness and become noticeably drier.

“Wrinkles get deeper, pores tend to become larger and skin loses its elasticity,” says Clarins’ Tamara. “When skin loses its ability to hold on to moisture, it desperately needs the help of active ingredients to bring back the suppleness it once had.” As skin is drier than ever, wrinkles deepen – especially around the eyes, forehead, mouth and neck. Skin also starts to thin, and cell turnover

Use a creamy – rather than a gel – cleanser morning and night if your skin is sensitive. If not, a mild cleanser containing AHAs or salicylic acid once a day will exfoliate gently.

MOISTURISING:

On top of your broad-spectrum SPF, you’ll need a moisturiser containing hyaluronic acids, a key ingredient that helps to lift and firm while stimulating collagen production to rehydrate and seal in the moisture so skin looks plump and smooth. Supplement this with a serum containing at least two types of antioxidants, such as lycopene, green tea or soy, and alternating them every day if possible. Alternating serums offers a wider benefit as different antioxidants address different problems. If your skin is beginning to look crêpey, try a serum or moisturiser containing all of the above, as well as peptides, which have been shown to strengthen collagen production.

Maintaining the regimented night-time regime you adopted in your 30s is key, with a few additional tweaks. Dermatologists say applying a prescription retinoid, every night, or every other night if your skin is sensitive, can reduce pigmentation, increase cell turnover and collagen production, thicken the epidermis and can even reverse pre-cancerous sun damage.
