the char­ac­ters own iPods. The fact that the Dash­wood sis­ters, Eli­nor and Marianne, are plucked from Nor­land Park and trans­ported to Devon with no money af­ter their fa­ther dies seems ob­vi­ously dated, and the story just doesn’t work as well in today’s world.

Re­cently in the press, Trol­lope said she wants 19th-cen­tury authors like Jane Austen and Ge­orge Eliot to be taught in schools to give chil­dren a “stronger sense of guid­ance”. In my opin­ion though, this con­tra­dicts her need to re­write the novel – the phrase “If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it” springs to mind.
