There’s nothing like frothy fiction to get you in the mood to swoon – here are 10 modern romances to snuggle up with this Valentine’s Day
Welcome to Rosie Hopkins’ Sweet Shop of Dreams
by Jenny Colgan
Rosie Hopkins is not happy about leaving her London life to help run her great Aunt Lilian’s sweet shop in the countryside. Convinced that the rural relocation will be far from exciting, she dreads her new humdrum existence – but she couldn’t be more wrong. Scrummy descriptions of sweetie jars and the family secrets they hide are reminiscent of Joanne Harris’ Chocolat, but Colgan’s novel is much more light-hearted and full of comic high jinks. While Rosie – who had become cynical in the city – finds renewed purpose through the interactions with her elderly aunt, her romantic horizons widen too with the entry of Stephen, Moray and Jake. The feisty-yet-awkward protagonist, warm narrative and candies make this the perfect indulgent Valentine’s Day read – no wonder it won The Romantic Novelists’ Association best novel of 2013.
