Teenager with DS

Friday - - Making A Difference -

Like all mums and dads, parents of children with Down’s syndrome struggle to cope when they become teenagers. Having DS can be an added barrier as it’s hard to integrate with mainstream children. That’s why the All 4 Down Syndrome Dubai group has set up the Teen Scheme.

Says Rebecca, “Teen Scheme Dubai was started by my friend Sally Pearson around five years ago. The teens and young adults in the group meet every other Saturday and go bowling or to discos. One mainstream group of people is teamed with one special needs group, from the age of 15 to 20.

“Until a few years ago there was no social life for special needs people. Through Teen Scheme I have to say my daughter Georgina has a great social life. It used to break my heart until a year ago when her brother and sister would be invited to birthday parties, or their friends would pop over, while Georgina would have no social contact. But now, due to Teen Scheme, Georgina has a busier social life than her brother and sister.”
