Big daddy love

E very father wants the best for his children, and Tom Attwater is no exception. Only he isn’t hoping that his little girl becomes a lawyer when she grows up, or that she gets the lead in the school play next year. Tom is desperate for five-year-old Kelli to receive treatment to cure her cancer – which could be fatal.

He wants to take her to Germany or America for surgery that costs Dh3 million, so he is busy fundraising by organising cake sales, karaoke nights and walkathons.

What makes the 31-year-old dad extra special is that he’s doing all this while coming to terms with terminal cancer. Tom was diagnosed with a brain tumour in 2012 and given just three years to live last April.

Instead of thinking about himself, he is determined to save his step-daughter’s life. So far he has raised three-quarters of the money he needs and won’t give up until he has it all.

He has also written a heart-breaking letter to his little girl, passing on the lessons he’s learnt in life. I burst into tears after reading it – and can’t stop thinking about this brave dad and his gorgeous daughter. Turn to page 48 to read his incredible story and if you’d like to help visit www.justgiving.com/helpkelli. Until next week,
