EATING DISORDERS – THE FACTS

Friday - - The Big Story -

Numbers of sufferers with eating disorders in the UAE – and across the globe – are unknown due to the secretive nature of the illness. But it is estimated only one in 10 sufferers seek treatment.

An estimated 80 to 95 per cent of sufferers are female.

A 2012 survey done at Al Ain University found 1.8 per cent of 900 girls questioned were anorexic.

If eating disorders are categorised as a mental health issue, they have the highest mortality rates of all mental illnesses.

Some 86 per cent of all eating disorders can be traced back to teenage years, according to the National Association of Anorexia Nervosa and Associated Disorders.

Research in the US found 20 per cent of all known anorexia cases led to premature death caused by complications related to their eating disorder, including suicide and heart problems.
