WHICH RED ARE YOU?

Friday - - Beauty -

You only have to look at red and the power of branding. “Independent studies have shown in the sporting universe athletes who wear red outperform those in other colours,” says a recent article in The Economic Times, India. “Researchers usually attribute this to an innate association of red with power, assertiveness and dominance. In a frenzied world where your advertising must shout loudest, red is the surest way to hit the decibel level, visually that is.” Translation – to sell yourself effectively reach for the rouge.

Being looked at this much takes courage, but being bold and plumping for a scarlet shade will in turn boost your confidence, giving you the power and self-belief to break through the glass ceiling. “Red lipstick can boost your confidence,” says fashion and style psychologist, Kate Nightingale. “Because the colour red is associated with confidence, sensuality and power, wearing red lipstick can induce those feelings in us.”

A recent poll by the British Heart Foundation also supports this, as results revealed 26 per cent of 1000 women questioned said red lipstick boosted their confidence. “Red lipstick is a source of strength,” Poppy King, creator of Lipstick Queen, recently told Psychologies magazine. “You put it on and suddenly you feel more capable than you did without it.” It’s a woman’s red flag to lift your chin and take on anything that comes at you.

It’s no coincidence Elizabeth Arden created red lipsticks for American women serving in the US army during the SecondWorldWar to help them feel more powerful and confident, and to boost morale no doubt.

Throughout history red lipstick has been a staple mood booster “Don’t know if you have a warm or cool skin tone? It’s easy to find out,” says Samira Olfat, regional make-up artist and brand ambassador for Max Factor Middle East. “Check the vein inside your wrist. If the colour of the vein is blue you have a cool skin tone, and if the colour of the vein is green then you have a warm one.”
