The Last Lecture

by Randy Pausch, 2008 I read this book four years ago, when I was looking for answers to life’s deeper questions. I just stumbled upon it during a family holiday in Bengaluru and read it in one sitting. I’ve read the entire book twice and keep referring back to it. The book was born out of a lecture Pausch gave in September 2007 titled ‘Really Achieving Your Childhood Dreams’. A month before giving the lecture, Pausch, who had been suffering from pancreatic cancer for a year, had been told his condition was terminal (he died on July 25, 2008). In his talk, which is strangely positive, he shrugs off the pity often given to those diagnosed with terminal illness. The book discusses everything Pausch wanted his children to know once he’s gone. He repeatedly stresses that it’s important to have fun. The book inspired me to make some life-altering personal decisions. I put away the things that stressed me and began to savour life. Thanks to the book I have a greater appreciation of the ‘now’ and it also taught me the power of surrendering to the universe. This is a book that I continue to gift to special friends on special occasions.
