A beautiful journey
Lying in a hotel bed opposite GULF NEWS headquarters, I WORKED out HOW to make Friday WORLD CLASS, and now it is
When I came for my interview for the editorship of Friday four years ago, I already had a vision of how to make the number one magazine in the UAE world class. Lying on the bed of the hotel opposite Gulf News headquarters I made a list of how to do that: make it beautiful, topical, with local and international reports, reportage and real stories, and introduce engaging ‘franchises’ like The Leisure Charts, Ask the Experts, Chiconomics and My Fabulous Friday. It was a gut instinct based on my very brief acquaintance with the Friday brand, the UAE and the audience. But it has paid off – you have written to me and the team in your droves saying how much you love the new-look Friday . And the most popular pages? Ask the Experts (especially hypnotherapist Russell Hemmings and barrister Stephen Field) and our real-life stories according to the 100,000 or so of you looking at our website, www.fridaymagazine.ae.
We are not a one-hit wonder though – this week we have a Middle East exclusive with Dev Patel on becoming a Hollywood leading man. You won’t recognise the fresh-faced Slumdog star with his long hair and beard on page 24 . It’s our bridal issue so we bring you the real-life story of the world’s only professional bridesmaid on page 48 , the romantic divorce lawyer (yes really!) on page 44 , and the triumph over tragedy of the bride who discovered she had cancer after her dream honeymoon.
There’s also the fascinating insight on what to do when you don’t like your children’s friends on page 40 , and last but not least, our fantastic – and popular – panel of experts on page 78 . Enjoy! Until next week...
Friday readers love our new look. Me and Art Editor Mark (above) admiring our work while Mars (below) handles our popular website
