Tom kept a daily journal of his journey. Here are some key extracts:

On the French winter weather: ‘Awful all day. It didn’t stop raining at all apart from when it snowed… I was soaked.’

On Croatian motorists: ‘The road was quiet and of the cars that did pass many gave friendly beeps of encouragement. After riding a lot in London it’s easy to tell this apart from an angry beep. The road was smooth and the view spectacular.’

On Indian hospitality: ‘It quickly became clear that people here are the most hospitable of any I have ever come across. Over the two days I spent in Mumbai I have been completely spoilt.’

On Indian cuisine: ‘I found a place to stop for a decent lunch. It was called Biryani & More. Although the word ‘more’ was a bit of a lie. They actually only served biryanis. It was, however, very tasty.’

On the Thailand heat: ‘I felt progressively worse and pulled in for a stop. I bought a litre of cold water and emptied it over my head. Now whether that solved the problem or whether the cold gave my body a massive shock I’m not sure, but I felt much better for it.’

On New Zealand wildlife: ‘We’re now in Kaikoura – a known whale-watching spot – and guess how many I saw? Absolutely none.’

On the American Great Lakes: ‘I’m curious, can I call the edge of Lake Superior the coast? Or is “shore” the only suitable name? It’s difficult to see it as a lake when looking out towards it. It is so big and I’m going to be skirting the edge of it for a fair while.’
