DO THE MATHS: THESE DATES ADD UP TO FUN
Can you celebrate Valentine’s without breaking the bank? Absolutely! We’ve got ten under-Dh500 dates for you.
Don’t go on the same old dinner-and-a-movie date for Valentine’s Day. Not only are these 10 outside-the-box Valentine’s dates fun, romantic bonding activities, they’re also mostly under Dh500 – for both of you. We’ve found where you can learn to dance or golf together, go on rock-climbing adventures and cruises, or simply watch a musical together – there’s something in here for everyone. Just don’t call it a cheap date.
Bring all your Ghost fantasies to life with a class at Ductac, which runs from 10am-1pm and is Dh250 per person, with all materials included. It’s fun, messy and you get to take home something creative. If pottery isn’t your cup of tea, you can take a painting and drawing class with your partner at the same venue. The Valentine’s Day class starts 9.30am, and ends at 12.30pm (perfect for a spot of lunch at our Mall of the Emirates favourite, Din Tai Fung. Nothing says ‘I love you’ more than a basket full of xiao long bao). It’s Dh225 per person with materials. Get there 15 minutes early to sign up. Call 04 341 4777 to book the pottery class.
ENJOY A COUPLE’S FOOTGOLF GAME
Celebrate your love with some healthy competition. In a game of footgolf, you manoeuvre around The Address Montgomerie Dubai’s golf course – without golf clubs – trying to score against your loved one. The price is Dh180 per couple, and you can play any day from February 12-16. Call 04 363 1209.
PICNIC ON TOP OF A MOUNTAIN
This one busts our budget – just a touch – but we had to include it. Just eat ramen for a few nights and treat yourselves to an afternoon tea on top of Jebel Jais in Ras Al Khaimah. Safarak Tours will arrange a guide to take you there from RAK’s new Via Ferrata site (Dh400 per person for the twice-daily tours of that thriller). The afternoon tea is Dh280 per person with food such as finger sandwiches, scones with cream and jam, and soft drinks. There’s also a sunset picnic from Dh280, up to Dh450 with bubbly. Not in RAK? It’s Dh150 for a transfer.
Talk about falling for someone. A rock climbing date at Rock Republic in Dubai Investments Park doubles as physical exercise and a good trust exercise for you and your partner. The session on Valentine’s Day runs from 5.30pm8.30pm, and is Dh100 per person. Contact rockrepublic@ globalclimbing.com.
If heights aren’t your thing, head over to Eastern Mangroves National Park in Abu Dhabi for a mangrove kayaking tour. The scenic trip starts from the e48 launch point at the park, lasts for 90 minutes and is Dh160 per person. Go to noukhada.ae/booking.
Have a night of jazz
Q’s Bar and Lounge at Palazzo Versace Dubai – Quincy Jones’ very own jazz bar, ladies and gentlemen – has live jazz from 6pm-2am on Valentine’s Day for Dh250 per person. The price includes a rose, Versace chocolates, and two cocktails from the menu. A new act, Sheléa, debuts on February 14 – she’s been on tour with Stevie Wonder, and sung for our #relationshipgoals inspiration, Barack and Michelle Obama, at the White House. She’ll be playing the piano alongside her threepiece band. Call 04 556 8865.
TAKE A DANCE CLASS TOGETHER
Both a workout and a bonding exercise, a dance class is a great way to spend Valentine’s Day. On February 14 Tempo Dance Center in JLT has bachata dancing, at 9pm, for Dh80 each. To sign up, call 04 420 2393. Salsa dancing is a classic couple’s activity – give it a try with SSS Dance School’s classes at The Room at Zayed Sports City in Abu Dhabi on Valentine’s Day. There’s a beginners’ class at 8.30pm, for Dh50 each. Call 050 442 2360. Already got your groove on? Head to venues that have open salsa nights on Tuesdays, such as Inka at Sofitel Downtown. They have a Dh395 Peruvian menu for two, including a beverage pitcher (04 346 9295).
