Q What is the purpose of a double cuff shirt, and how should you choose which cufflinks to wear?

A The double cuff was created for a reason. If one goes back in history, it’s interesting to note it originated in England and was called the double cuff or the turnback. Back then, there were six cuff holes instead of the four that we see today. The purpose was to hide the dirty part of the cuff by folding it in further after extensive wear.

The double cuff, after going over to America, was named the French cuff due to its sophisticated style, which Americans associated with the French.

Cufflinks have grown immensely in popularity over the years. From being just a status symbol during the early 1930s they are now a way of expressing individuality.

Gentlemen today accessorise their cuffs by wearing cufflinks that relate to their job, hobby or passion. It’s become a way of expressing your personality as well as being a really good conversation starter. As it is a minimalistic and subtle detail you can never go wrong or be too outlandish in your choice of cufflinks. One should wear cufflinks that give people a glimpse of your personality.

The ability to pair your cufflinks with your attire while keeping the social setting in mind can have a profound effect on people.

A gentleman should always carefully choose their cufflinks in a manner that will convey the message they want and play on the mind of the observer in a way that will ensure you are not easily forgotten. Achieving this state will propel you to being the epitome of a true gentleman.
