ROLL OUT THE CARPETS
The Fatima Bint Mohammad Bin Zayed Initiative (FBMI) has assembled the region’s largest ball of yarn at Dubai Festival City’s Festival Square, until June 16. Crafted from wool from Afghanistan that has been hand-spun by female weavers and dyed with natural vegetable colours, the giant yarn ball is part of FBMI’s Artists for Change programme that aims to help underprivileged artisans in Afghanistan by collaborating with UAE artists who donate their artwork to be woven into hand-knotted carpets. While you’re there have a go at a traditional carpet loom. Proceeds from carpet sales go to support female Afghan weavers – 10am-10pm Sunday to Wednesday and 10am12am Thursday to Saturday.
