MOMA A NO-GO? GET ARTSY IN LONDON

Friday - - Travel -

There’s no denying that New York’s Museum of Modern Art (far right) is an art aficionado’s go-to but London’s Tate Modern (right) gives MOMA a run for its money as Europe’s most-visited modern art gallery. Housed in the former Bankside Power Station, the iconic Herzog & De Meuron-designed gallery presents a visual history of international modern and contemporary art from the 20th century onwards including regular retrospectives from the likes of Damien Hirst and Edvard Munch, as well as performance pieces and multimedia installations. Not a one-trick pony, over at Tate Britain, another art outpost, British artists’ works from the 1500s to present day are on show. Other London galleries worth a visit include the West Bank Gallery, pop art-inspired Scream Gallery and Consingsby Gallery. Muse over your experiences and eat modern Indian at Atul Kochhar’s Michelin-starred Mayfair restaurant, Benares, or dine around the world on fabulous street cuisine at Borough Market. Stay in the creative confines of the 10-room Artist Residence in Pimlico (from Dh1,160) or celebrity haunt Chiltern Firehouse (from Dh2,600), known for its ultraglamorous interiors, impeccable service and award-winning restaurant located in the converted engine house. Getting there: There are daily direct flights from the UAE to two London airports.
