DO LASERS WORK TO CLEAR ACNE?
Q I’m suffering from acne, acne scars and large pores. I’ve cut down on sugar, dairy and oily foods and now include a lot of greens in my diet. A doctor has suggested laser treatment for acne and large pores. What is your opinion?
AThough you haven’t mentioned your age, I assume that you are in your late teens or early 20s. Your issues will need to be addressed individually through a detailed examination. For instance, acne can be treated with various options ranging from topical creams, gels, solutions and cleansing masks as a first-line treatment. As a second-line treatment, oral antibiotics can be prescribed depending upon the severity of the acne and responsiveness.
As a third-line treatment, a course of medication to treat severe and resistant acne can be prescribed.
Acne in general is diagnosed only on clinical examination. However, in severe cases, particularly in female patients, certain investigations could be worth performing.
Serum hormonal profiles and pelvic ultrasounds are among the necessary tests to rule out any underlying conditions, such as Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS.) In these cases an endocrinological consultation is highly recommended.
Acne scars are treated based on their clinical assessment, whether they are hypertrophic (papulonodular scars) or atrophic (ice-pick scars.)
Common treatment options include various acid peels as well as use of lasers. Here again, I would strongly emphasise that you select a skilled dermatologist with a good reputation to get the best possible results
The problem of your large pores is a sister issue related to your acne, and indicates the presence of hyperactive oil (sebaceous) glands in the dermal layer of your skin.
With the improvement of acne, particularly through oil controlling treatments, these large pores tend to improve to a great extent. In cases of incomplete success, topical gentle facial peels or microdermabrasion treatment sessions can complete the rest of the job.
