VERDICT The use of lofts instead of club numbers can be frustratingly confusing (sorry, etching it on the hosel doesn’t count), but there is plenty of innovation in these irons

that can benefit many. Hollow irons in lofts from 20 to 31 degrees feature a 17-gram tungsten weight near the sole to help you get the ball in the air. The traditional cavity-back irons (32 to 47 degrees) place mass higher on the head to create a more controlled trajectory. Ben Hogan once said golf clubs were “90 percent shaft and 10 percent how it goes through the dirt.” The PTx’s wide sole uses a V-like shape to make it play like a narrower, more versatile sole.

COMMENTS (L) Sharplooking. Has a definite cool factor. (M) You can feel the softness of the strike in your hands.
