Think golf on the world’s second largest continent and South Africa instantly springs to mind. But this new course on the shores of Lake Victoria in Uganda might just change a few perceptions.
Lake Victoria Serena Golf Resort & Spa will open next month with a professional event – the Serena Johnnie Walker Open from Oct. 3-6 – and is openly courting UAE golfers given a manageable five hour direct flight to Entebbe and pleasurable 16-25°C temperatures from April-November and a maximum of 30°C in the warmer months of December to March.
“The construction boom of golf courses and its related facilities in East Africa is a clear indication of an unexploited market for golf tourism,” said resort manager Frankline Nyakundi.
Golf Plan USA, under the guidance of the principal architect Kevin Ramsey, were responsible for the course which is uniquely isolated on a green island and offers sweeping views over the 68,800 km² Lake Victoria.
After golf, the resort offers fine dining, spa treatments, “romantic” picnic lake cruises and even the chance to visit the neighbouring Chimpanzee Island. www.serenahotels.com/serenalakevictoria
