Dur­ing a busy work­ing week, the siren call of a take­away or con­ve­nience meal can be all too hard to ig­nore. thank­fully, when teamed up with healthy meal ser­vice Live’ly Ex­press and high-end ap­pli­ances firm Miele for a master­class re­cently, it be­came clear that cater­ing to your fam­ily’s crav­ings needn’t mean sac­ri­fic­ing your di­etary goals. here, Live’ly’s se­nior clin­i­cal di­eti­cian, Yas­mine had­dad, and chef is­mail taha let us in on their se­crets.

Why do you think par­ents strug­gle when it comes to healthy home cook­ing?

Y: in a busy city like Dubai, par­ents of­ten for­get to plan wise food choices and to stay ac­tive and fit. cook­ing in gen­eral re­quires time, plan­ning, prepa­ra­tion and the right cook­ing equip­ment. some par­ents also have the no­tion that healthy cook­ing may ren­der a meal taste­less, but the re­al­ity is that mak­ing a dish more nu­tri­tious can be as sim­ple as swap­ping one or two in­gre­di­ents.

Does cook­ing healthily have to be time con­sum­ing?

I: i find healthy cook­ing to be less time con­sum­ing and messy as you can use an oven, grill or steamer to cook your food in a large batch for the whole fam­ily. such healthy cook­ing meth­ods also en­hance flavour and pre­serve nu­tri­ents, while lean items usu­ally re­quire less time to cook.

Do ap­pli­ances make a big dif­fer­ence when it comes to cook­ing healthily?

I: new mul­ti­func­tional tech­nolo­gies, such as those adopted by Miele, have shown to be more user-friendly, mak­ing healthy cook­ing an eas­ier and more pleas­ant ex­pe­ri­ence. the dif­fer­ent com­part­ments of the Miele oven not only save cook­ing time but also pre­serve qual­ity and flavour.

What ad­vice would you give par­ents look­ing to boost their fam­ily’s diet?

Y: the in­ter­net is filled with de­li­cious, healthy recipes. when you find one that catches your at­ten­tion and is easy to pre­pare, don’t be afraid to try it. af­ter all, a healthy body goes along with a healthy mind, and a health­ier and live­lier you makes a bet­ter par­ent and role model.

Why did you de­cide to demon­strate this par­tic­u­lar recipe?

I: this is usu­ally pre­pared with full fat in­gre­di­ents and a lot of oil, ren­der­ing it less nu­tri­tious, but it is also an easy dish rich in healthy spices, veg­eta­bles and pro­teins when cooked cor­rectly. that’s why i wanted to shed light on a health­ier way to pre­pare it.
