Whether you’re an avowed nonas­ties shop­per, or you con­cen­trate your su­per­mar­ket spend­ing to the so-called ‘dirty dozen’ of the fruit and veg aisles, chances are in re­cent years you’ve given more thought to what goes into your kitchen cup­boards. But do you pay the same at­ten­tion to your bath­room cab­i­net?

As a self-con­fessed beauty ad­dict, i’m for­ever seek­ing out new prod­ucts, my ‘strict’ se­lec­tion cri­te­ria cen­ter­ing around what a cream prom­ises to do and how pretty it will look on my dress­ing ta­ble rather than what, chem­i­cally speak­ing, it con­tains. Af­ter all, i may be a sucker for pack­ag­ing, but the nitty gritty of the in­gre­di­ents list has al­ways, to my eye, looked like ab­ject gob­blede­gook, which never re­ally struck me as a con­cern un­til i be­came a mum.

And therein lies the prob­lem. if we don’t un­der­stand the la­bels, how can we make the right choices, for our­selves and our fam­i­lies? this month, we’ve pulled to­gether some of the city’s lead­ing nat­u­ral beauty ex­perts to de­code those baf­fling la­bels and re­veal the key chem­i­cals they’ve binned from their bath­rooms for good. My dress­ing ta­ble has never looked less clut­tered...
