Powering the world’s largest single-site smelter

Gulf Business - - PROFILE -

This year, the world’s largest and most efficient heavy duty gas turbine – GE’s HA technology - is making its way to Bahrain. Three HA units will form the beating heart of Aluminium Bahrain B.S.C.’s (Alba) Power Station 5. No ordinary facility, the project will be capable of generating up to 1,792 megawatts (MW) of power for the world’s largest single-site smelter on completion.

GE’s HA technology has been selected for the project as it provides reliability, grid flexibility and a quick response to the operational needs at Alba, as well as reducing the costs per $/ tonne, providing Alba with more resilience to compete in a volatile and competitive market.

GE is leading a consortium to oversee the design, engineering, procurement, construction and commissioning of Power Station 5.

The project marks several references. It will be the first time that GE’s H-Class gas turbines will be used in the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) region, as well as their first use in the aluminum smelting industry anywhere in the world, ushering in a new era of efficiency for the sector.
