-

1988 - Americans voted for a successor to President Reagan. Republican George Bush was elected as the 41st president of the United States with a crushing victory over Democrat Michael Dukakis. The 64-year-old vice-president won an easy victory over Dukakis, taking 40 of the 50 states and chalking up a 54-46 per cent advantage in the popular vote. It marked the first time in 152 years that a sitting vice-president won the presidency.
