01 LONDON DESIGNS ON SUCCESS
A landmark modernist building from the 1960s has been retuned by John Pawson to become the new home of the Design Museum. From its previous premises in Shad Thames it has now tripled in size to 10,000 square metres, with the new building accommodating two major temporary gallery spaces, a free permanent collection display, a restaurant overlooking Holland Park, auditorium, library, archive and new learning facilities. The original façade has been replaced with a double-glazed skin, significantly improving insulation standards and allowing daylight into the interior, which has been remodelled to feature a series of calm spaces ordered around an oak-lined atrium.
