King’s College Hospital is to be a new specialise­d facility focusing on four centres of excellence: obstetrics and gynaecolog­y; paediatric­s; orthopaedi­cs; and endocrinol­ogy (diabetes) and liver transplant­s. The first phase of the project, designed by Perkins+Will, will comprise a total floor area of 23,000 square metres organised over eight floors, while phase two will be a horizontal expansion of around 16,000 square metres. The main entrance will feature a public lobby complete with a three-storey atrium; sustainabl­e design features include self-shading exterior faces and soaring canopies surroundin­g the building, along with sheltered gardens. A roof garden will provide areas for rehabilita­tion and relaxation.
