07 MADRID WINNING ENTRY

An international competition to revitalise and refurbish the historic Hall of Realms as a new addition to the Museo Nacional del Prado campus has been won by Foster + Partners and Rubio Arquitectura. The Dhs118 million project includes recovering an original 17th-Century façade and creating a new indoor public space. Original façade openings will be reinstated to enable sunlight to reach interior areas, while a new roof will harvest energy from integrated solar cells, and exhibition space will be increased by around 2500 square metres. Construction work is expected to start in 2018, a year before the Prado celebrates its bicentenary.
