Four con­tracts worth more than Dhs430 mil­lion for Deira Is­lands, the new 15.3-square kilo­me­tre wa­ter­front city be­ing con­structed in Dubai, have been awarded by de­vel­oper Nakheel.

The an­nounce­ments cover is­lands A and B on the four-is­land project, and are for a sewage treat­ment plant, a district cool­ing plant and a sub­sta­tion, as well as pil­ing work for an 800-room beach re­sort.

In to­tal, Nakheel has now in­vested al­most Dhs7.5 bil­lion in in­fra­struc­ture and con­struc­tion con­tracts for Deira Is­lands, which is set to trans­form Dubai’s Deira district into a world-class hub for tourism, re­tail and en­ter­tain­ment.

The wa­ter­front city will add 40 kilo­me­tres, in­clud­ing 21 km of beach, to Dubai’s coast­line, and will pave the way for the de­vel­op­ment of hun­dreds of ho­tels, res­i­dences and at­trac­tions. Deira Is­lands is ex­pected to have a pop­u­la­tion of 250,000 and to cre­ate 80,000 jobs.

A con­struc­tion con­tract worth Dhs4.2 bil­lion was in April awarded for Deira Mall, the cen­tre­piece of Deira Is­lands and Dubai’s big­gest shop­ping mall in terms of re­tail space.

Deira Is­lands Night Souk, com­plete with more than 5300 wa­ter­side shops and restau­rants, is un­der con­struc­tion and due to open in 2018.
