Hospitality - Hotel GAJ Mysk Al Mouj
Located in the heart of The Wave Muscat development in Oman, this project is the flagship hotel for the Mysk Hotels by Shaza group. From the early stages, it was important to the designers and the client that the hotel was inviting, fresh and distinctive – and this is what guided the design approach.
Oman is a very open and welcoming country and the operator wanted to explore ways in which traditional elements could be used within the building while also giving the hotel a contemporary look.
The designers drew on the country’s rich traditions, such as ornate jewellery, elaborate embroidery and traditional clothing, and thoughtfully translated them into elements throughout the hotel – including the brightly coloured floor coverings inspired by the patterns of local dress, and artwork on the walls featuring imposing forts and woven textiles. The design narrative blends contemporary style with the past to create a meaningful public space.
The judges were thrilled with its elegant, creative and subtle disposition. They especially enjoyed the use of wooden beams, which express verticality within a closed space and provide a sense of openness. They also praised the design language as being consistent and giving a remarkable identity to the space.
