In September, the excitement starts to build, and throughout October the momentum crescendos until November, when the global design community gathers with bated breath to see the region’s top designers, at the event that’s given local creatives an incomparable global platform: Dubai Design Week.
In its fourth edition, the show (12-17 November) continues to grow, cementing itself as the largest creative festival in the region, and Dubai as the design capital of the Middle East. This year, the free-toattend programme will comprise more than 230 events throughout Dubai Design District (d3) and across the city; with +120 institutions participating, the 2018 edition will see 20% growth.
Director of Dubai Design Week, William Knight says: “Dubai Design Week 2018 will build on the success of the previous editions of the event, with an outstanding array of installations, exhibitions and activations, and the diversity of talent represented is the strongest yet. Dubai’s design community will take centre stage, alongside regional collaborations and pre-eminent international profiles.”
This year will see a series of firsts, including the launch of the show’s first app, allowing visitors to create personalised schedules while onthe-go, based on preferences and interests, and to be the first to get notified of must-attend launches and events. And for the first time, Dubai Design Week is partnering with Facebook through a real-world activation set in d3.
The commercial centrepiece of Dubai Design Week, Downtown Design returns from 13 to 16 November; it will continue the premieres within its larger size, and will feature a new section and captivating new creative feature concepts.
Rue Kothari, Fair Director at Downtown Design, says: “Awardwinning architects H+A have master-planned the fair around the theme of ‘ Liveable Cities’; new fair features will include bespoke café concepts, a pop-up retail destination, indoor landscapes and activations on the waterfront terrace. This new blueprint, coupled with a fresh creative direction, will mark a new phase of growth and success for the fair.”
