A stun­ning ce­ramic sculp­ture is fea­tured this month.

The piece

Co­ri­o­lis is a ce­ramic piece made us­ing the sag­gar fir­ing method and is part of the Sil­ica Col­lec­tion, a glass and ce­ram­ics ensem­ble de­rived from or­ganic forms and tex­tures. It is de­scribed as an ar­che­typal sculp­tural ce­ramic form, ar­tic­u­lat­ing themes of harmony, bal­ance and op­ti­mised sim­plic­ity.

The back­ground

Ir­ish de­signer Michael Rice, win­ner of the Van Cleef and Ar­pels Mid­dle East Emer­gent De­signer Award at the 2016 De­sign Days Dubai, spe­cialises in ce­ram­ics. He is par­tic­u­larly in­ter­ested in terra sig­illata and fir­ing pro­ce­dures such as raku, smoke and sag­gar, and his work is con­cerned with sur­face, tes­sel­la­tion and nat­u­ral ge­om­e­try.
