OUR CUISINE IS DIVERSE AND RICH IN FLAVOURS
Influenced by Russian, Polish, German and Turkish cuisines, Ukrainian dishes are well-known for their diversity and amazing flavours. Although their dishes have origins from different countries, the way they are prepared is uniquely Ukrainian. Ukrainians are also known to be welcoming and hospitable people and their meals are usually served in generous quantities.
Often referred to as the “bread basket of Europe,” bread is a staple food item in the country. They follow many different methods of baking bread and each plays a role in the authentic traditions and customs of the land. The centrepiece of the cuisine is bread made from rye or wheat flour and baked in traditional ovens. Thanks to this, they have an array of tasty bread-based desserts, which are not very sweet.
One of the most famous dishes of the land is the traditional borsch, a piquant beetroot soup, which has an intense red colour and strong aroma. Ukrainian cuisine is quite regional and there are about 30 types of borsch available, as it is prepared differently in each region. The soup is usually served with pampushki, small garlic buns.
In Dubai, Vesna Restaurant and Lounge (045597852), Conrad Dubai, offers the traditional borsch with a contemporary twist. Other delights include varenyky, boiled dumplings, which come with an unlimited selection of fillings, including mashed potatoes or meat, and they are topped with sour cream or fried onions. They are also popular as a sweet dish, and are most popularly stuffed with cherries. Nefertiti (043558855), Mankhool, offers a selection of authentic Ukrainian dishes including varenyky with either a filling of potatoes or sweet cheese, both served with sour cream. A dish that has made its way on most menus in the city is Chicken Kiev. Gulnaz Restaurant & Café (044534887), Dubai Marina, serves up a delectable version.
