sharjah — Breaking a previous record set by a British curriculum school in Hong Kong last November, 4,882 students of a school in Sharjah entered the Guinness World Records for creating the largest human image of a boat.

On Tuesday, students from kindergarten to Grade 8, gathered at the India International School Sharjah’s football ground wearing colours of the UAE National Flag to create the new record. Students from 12 different nationalities, and a few differently-abled students took part in the record-breaking event.

Speaking to Khaleej Times on the sidelines of the event, school principal Manju Reji said that the event was held to mark Children’s Day in India, which also happens to be the birth anniversary of Jawaharlal Nehru, India’s first prime minister. The adjudicator for Guinness World Records Ahmed Gaber declared officially India International School ‘Amazing’ for breaking the world record.

Since the UAE National Day is fast approaching, the school decided to hold the event as part of early celebrations, said the principal. “Pandit Nehru (a fond sobriquet for the former prime minister) was said to be very fond of children. We thought that his birth anniversary would be the perfect opportunity to celebrate this achievement,” she added. School officials also said that students began practising for the event 12days ahead of the big day.

The boat also represents the students’ journey in education, said Salman Ibrahim, director of PACE Group, the parent organisation of

The students are the real heroes today. They cultivated these thoughts into an unpretentious formation of a boat in the colour of UAE’s National Flag.” Zubair Ibrahim, director, PACE Group

the school. He added: “We’re exhilarated that our school has achieved this feat. Shifana Muiz, the headmistress came up with the idea and executed it brilliantly. I think the students have truly experienced a once-in-a-lifetime experience as well.”

“We’re hoping that with this, we can look forward to breaking more world records. The full credit goes to the students who worked very hard to make this a reality.”

Meanwhile, Zubair Ibrahim, director of PACE Group, said: “The students’ are the real heroes today. They cultivated these thoughts into an unpretentious formation of a boat in the colour of UAE’s National Flag.”
