Students celebrate ‘unity in diversity’

dubai — School students joined the flag-hoisting ceremony held at the Knowledge and Human Developmen­t Authority (KHDA) to celebrate UAE Flag Day on Thursday.

Dr Abdulla Al Karam, directorge­neral of KHDA, said: “Our flag is a symbol of pride and happiness. We represent to the world ‘unity in diversity’ and on this day we come together to celebrate our values of peace, tolerance, giving and happiness.”

Flag-hoisting at the Dubai Healthcare City (DHCC) was done in a unique way as one of the medical students from the Mohammed Bin Rashid University (MBRU) of Medicine and Health Sciences was given a the honour to raise the flag on the premises.

Dr Ramadan AlBlooshi, CEO of DHCC, said: “This year, we are proud to have Maryam Alobeidli, third year medical student at the MBRU, raise the flag on behalf of the DHCC. Maryam represents the true spirit of a country that emphasises the importance of developing its youth and education.”

An overwhelme­d Maryam said: “It was great honour for me to hoist my country’s flag on such an important day for us. While raising the flag, I could not help reflecting and admiring how far our country has come in every way and how many opportunit­ies it has given to all its residents to be successful.”

Thirteen-year-old Indian child artist Mohammed Omar, who has excelled in the panoramic sketches of the UAE skyline waited patiently outside the Union House to catch a glimpse of His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice-President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai, who was present at the Union House today for flag hoisiting ceremony. “I was born and raised in the UAE and I make mostly sketches of the UAE and its leaders. I come every year to the Union House to mark all the special days of the country. The UAE is my home and I dedicate my work and my happiness to this country.”

Among the schools that marked the flag day in Dubai, was The Millennium School — Dubai (TMS) where students from KG1 to Grade 12 gathered around the flag post at 11am, to witness the hoisting of the UAE flag.
